Road accidentology is understood as a basic and necessary science to improve road safety, since it is the first level of study of the genesis, development and the effects of these complex, heterogeneous physical phenomena that are traffic accidents. Therefore it is important for society that road accidentology is practiced correctly, freely and independently, both in pu
blic and in private, since it is necessary to know the truth about what is and happens in traffic accidents, because without it, it is impossible to effectively develop road safety and the measures and strategies to achieve greater security, can not reach their objective if they are based on the confusion and mistakes of appearances and conjectures. Road Accidentology must draw on such other sciences and/or forensic and/or criminological disciplines that allow it to effectively fulfill its function.
According to the above, the efforts of the OIAV focus on drift to terms and scientific views, that rooted tendency to surmise in common terms about the causes of accidents and traffic safety. Offering to society and its institutions, to facilitate the ability to effectively work for those individual and social goods that are road safety and justice.
In the OIAV, we understand road safety as “The healthy welfare state in the free and autonomous use of our streets and highways.” Accordingly, the Road Safety would
be one that, recognizing the undeniable importance of avoiding accidents and casualties, put the emphasis on safe, free and independent access (accessible) public, urban and interurban areas.
However, road safety is a part of security, and this is one of the main indicators of quality of life, so improving road safety directly improves the quality of life in our community. It is necessary, therefore, contribute to a better understanding of the safety concept, fleeing from simple conventional approaches from traffic engineering (vehicle and route) and / or “driver education” issue latter currently limited to traffic issues and driving behavior and is very subject to time and curriculum constraints.
The researcher must be a modest multidisciplinary apprentice, but an expert in research, that is, to identify, relate and explain according to the foundations and methods of science, things and conditions that come together in the system settings to alter movement and produce anomalous phenomena. This requires a position that differs from the scientific or technical hyper-specialized, given the complex and heterogeneous nature of the road traffic system.
This position seeks to explain the conditions of the configuration (causes), which alter the motion of the system producing the abnormal physical phenomenon (the accident), but with the prospect integrated and coherent mentioned (the whole and parts), like Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said: “they are so passionate about the bricks, that they completely forgot the building that these bricks build”.
